Staff News

This page contains the latest staff information, and replaces the newsletter previously published bi-monthly. We feel that this is a more effective and timely manner to let you know of changes to Revive and the work we are undertaking. If you have any information to submit please let us know.

September 2007

Did you know there is an incident form on this website? If you have an untoward incident during a course please ensure that it is completed.

August 2007

For those who haven't heard yet we have been reappointed to the NI Fire & Rescue Service for the coming 3-years. We also have a number of exciting developments with some larger NI companies in the pipeline which we'll be sharing with you all shortly

Over the past month we had a staff survy out there for everyone to respond too. Below are the results in all their glory. In the coming weeks well post our response to the comments and results on the news page so you know what we intend to do.

Overall we are pleased with how everyone feels the company is going, but as with all there are some areas for improvement. Stay tuned for our response.

July 2007

Hi all and thanks to those who came to the conference. In case you haven't heard we are still awaiting the outcome of 2 Tenders, however have been successful in a Tender to GVRT and to the Northern Childcare Partnership.

We are running a staff survey this month. It's totally anonymous so please take the time to give us your views! Click on the link below to be taken to the survey.

Are you using the student briefing sheets?  As discussed at the conference it is unacceptable to individually brief students for exams. A big part of our approach in tenders (and why we win them) is that we guarantee to have all students undertake competency based exams - part of this is using the briefing sheets as well as the fake wounds and first aid kit, with gloves, so that everyone has the same information and equipment. We are checking up on this aspect of exams more closely and if you aren't using them expect to be queried.

June 2007

In early June we held our third instructor's conference in Belfast. A range of topics were discussed with exercises undertaken on marketing and course content. The agenda for the day is reproduced below, along with some of the key flowcharts and issues raised. Since the conference we have updated our student handouts and will start to use them shortly.

The update on how to complete a course booking form can be found here.

We are currently looking for expressions of interest for people to take on either a client relationship role or sector target role. These are paid positions and if you've got a bit of time and feel you would like to have a chat to current or potential clients please let us know.

Policies, procedures and forms can be found here.

One issue covered was the teaching of Paediatric CPR to lay persons and 'healthcare professionals'. We are increasingly being asked to undertake such training in GP surgeries, and as such there is a need to be aware of the following protocol:

  • All GP's and staff get taught the 30:2 ratio with paediatric modifiers which are as follows:

Paediatric modifiers: Give 5 initial breaths before starting chest compression. If on your own, perform 1 minute CPR before going for help. Compress the chest approximately one-third of its depth. Use two fingers for an infant under 1 year; use one or two hands for a child over 1 year as needed to achieve an adequate depth of compression.

  • 'Healthcare Professionals' with a 'duty to respond' (as shown below from the UK Resus Website) also get taught 15:2 in a session aside from other staff

1) What is a 'Healthcare Professional with a duty to respond', specifically in relation to: • General practitioners • Health Visitors who are running a baby clinic or similar • School nurses • Mental health nurses working in the child mental health units?

Answer: The full paediatric BLS sequence is for healthcare professionals with a duty to respond to paediatric emergencies (e.g. A&E staff, paediatric doctors and nurses, paramedics). These people usually work in teams of two or more rescuers. Lay providers who are particularly likely to attempt resuscitation of a child should be taught the adult sequence with the paediatric modifiers (note 1). It is recognised, however, that there are groups that fall between these two definitions, such as those mentioned above, where it is unclear which sequence is the more appropriate. The decision as to what should be taught may be made locally (for example, by the Resuscitation Committee) according to circumstances and available resources. In coming to a decision, it may be helpful to ask the following questions: • Are the providers healthcare professionals? (note 2) • Would they normally be expected to have to resuscitate an infant or child during the course of their work? • Do they usually work alone or in a team?

Generally, the full paediatric sequence should be taught to those who give a positive answer to all 3 questions. General Practitioners, Health Visitors, and School Nurses, for example, are healthcare professionals working with children, but they often work alone. Although they may have to resuscitate a child (or indeed an adult), this would not be a part of their normal role, and would be very unusual event. It would be sufficient to teach these groups the adult sequence with the paediatric modifiers unless they expressed a particular wish or interest to learn the full paediatric sequence. Mental Health nurses working in child mental health units are healthcare professionals working in teams of 2 or more. Although it would be unusual in most such units to have to resuscitate a child, some may treat high-risk children (such as those with severe anorexia nervosa) so it would be reasonable to allow training decisions to be based on local circumstances.

May 2007

Our annual Instructors Conference will be held on Saturday 2nd June 2007 at the Europa Hotel at 9.30am until 12.00 - followed by lunch. We would ask that all instructors make the effort to attend this conference if at all possible. It will run for a half day, followed by a relaxing Jazz afternoon (and potentially lasting into the evening)!

For our lay instructors, it is vital that you attend if you wish to become accredited to teach AED and FPOS courses, as the progression programme will be outlined at this conference.

April 2007

Textbook update - Essential reading for all instructors. Our preferred textbook (Version 5.0) has now gone full colour. The author has supplied the attached as notes to the changes in the new book. If you've any queries please contact John in the first instance. If we can't answer them we'll seek further information as appropriate.

Basics Newsletter - Contains some interesting Articles.

March 2007

We're now putting all the upcoming courses on the front page of the staff area. If you are available to instruct or examine a course please let John know. Equally, if you want to attend a course as an observer, with a view to being able to teach such courses please also let him know.

We are being AUDITED. In May of this year we are being audited by the IHCD. It is therefore essential that we have your signed employee forms back to us by then. Also, a record of your CPD for the calendar year 2006. An excel version of a CPD record can be downloaded here. There is no set requirement, and on the final worksheet is an example of some CPD to jog your memory. The simple fact is that if we don't have your forms our accrediting bodies may not allow you to continue teaching for us.

February 2007

Course booking sheets: We have previously raised the issue of course booking sheets and the importance of having them correctly completed by instructors, examiners and students (legibly!). Due to an increasing number being returned half filled in (such details as dates of courses missing, instructors and/or examiner names etc) we will now be returning them to you for completion. The sheet here shows you how to complete a course booking form.

If you do not know how to fill in a course booking sheet please contact us so we can show you! (Rant over)

Equipment: We are looking to purchase a wide range of equipment including (but not limited to) EDP, gloves, trauma kits, disposables, manikins, AED trainer, ambulance equipment etc. If you have a contact or have some 'stuff' for sale please let us know.

FPOS Instructors: We have recently updated the timings of the FPOS Intermediate course. It is essential if you are an instructor that you use the new course timings at the next course.

Personal Information: We are progressively writing to all employees to update your contact details, registration etc. If you've any queries about the information we're asking for please give us a call.

January 2007

Welcome to the new year, new course outlines and new examinations. We've now launched our new course modules including FAW/FAWR as well as EAP and CPR course outlines. They are more in line with ICHD requirements and we've been more prescriptive with regards the practical elements to be undertaken as part of the courses. There are new instructor CDs in all the packs, and whilst the course content hasn't changed greatly there are some new videos for you to consider using as well as an entirely new written examination.

It is worth in particular noting that we've split out respiratory emergencies from medical and made an airway/respiratory module, and also combined shock/circulatory emergencies into a single module. As noted these are in line with ICHD teaching.

If you've any queries on the new slides or outlines please give John or David a shout prior to commencing a course.

December 2006

Merry Christmas to everyone and thanks for your help during the year. We are meeting for drinks in the Europa on the afternoon of the 16th (Saturday from about 3pm) to soak up the atmosphere and some jazz. We look forward to working with everyone in 2007.

November 2006

Who likes getting paid? We all do...... recently there have been a number of instances when instructor forms have not been returned in what could be considered a timely manner. This has a HUGE impact on our cash flow... by way of example, this is how we get our money!

Course Run 1st of Month
Forms Returned 5th of Month
Billing and Certificates Sent to Client 10th of Month
We pay you! 31st of Month
We get our Money 15th of Next Month

This is what happens in the ideal situation. Many of our clients take in excess of 45 days to pay our bills. Coupled with insurance, tax etc, we don't have the spare cash capacity to keep paying people when the forms aren't returned for over 3 weeks.

Therefore this is a PLEASE attempt to get your instructor forms back to us ASAP. It really is in your interests.

October 2006

2007 courses - We're currently revising all our courses ready for 2007. This includes the range of courses, their content as well as the timings and presentation. We're please to say the presentation has been updated and looks far more professional. If you have any suggestions please let us know sooner rather than later. If you want to review a course contact John.

Oh the weather outside is frightful..... Yes it's coming up to Christmas.... So what do you want to do for a party? Let us know otherwise we'll decide (and it won't be pretty!). We will be launching our 2007 course content at the party however, so it's in your interest to come along.

You'll all shortly be receiving an update on what personal information we hold as well as what we need to ensure that we meet all the IHCD requirements. Please get back to us when you receive these letters as they are vital for our ongoing accreditation. If you've any queries please contact John.

Not getting enough work? Contact John to let him know your availability......

September 2006

After a very quiet July and August courses are again picking up. If you haven't already done so, please let JOHN know your availability .......

We have now implemented a marketing strategy and are continuing to target specific businesses and sectors. We hope that this will result in increased work, and an increased variety of work. We have recently placed ads in a major construction newspaper which is distributed monthly, and have someone working about a day a week following up on sales leads.

If you have any ideas please let us know so we can follow them up.

June 2006

Booking Sheets: Can every please ensure that they fill in legibly the booking sheets! We have recently had an increase in the number of returned certificates which have had names spelt wrongly because we haven't been able to read them. This is YOUR responsibility as an instructor.

May 2006

26th May: Can all instructors please start to let John know via either email or Text their availability for courses at least 2 weeks (preferably 4 weeks) in advance. The HSE (NI) are starting to ask that we allocate staff and let them know in advance, so it is going to become more important that we keep to their guidelines. If you've any queries please contact John.

9th May :Revive is excited to announce that we have been approved by Edexcel / IHCD to teach the First Person on Scene (Basic and Intermediate) courses.

Click for the Basic Syllabus, and for the Intermediate Syllabus.

Clinical Session Handouts

April 2006

IHCD/Edexcel accreditation - You'll all be pleased to hear that we have passed the first stage of accreditation, and all that remains is a site visit from the assessors. This is great news and very positive for us given the feedback we've received on our application and the comprehensiveness of it. We'll keep you posted.

Annual Charity - Each year Revive chooses one charity whom we support with the provision of discounted or free training courses. It is up to you, the employees to nominate then choose a charity, which will be chosen at the instructors conference (see below). We are open to any suggestions as long as the charity is based in NI, is non-political in nature and would benefit from our courses. Nominations to John prior to the 5th May please. (If they've got a website so much the better).

Instructors Conference: There will be a half day instructors conference held on the 5th May 2006 in the afternoon. The conference will commence with a pre-briefing at 10am for all those interested in teaching First Person on Scene and the conference proper will then commence at 12.00 for all persons involved in instruction/examination for Revive.

March 2006

We thought it would be useful to update everyone on the new rank structure within the NI Fire and Rescue Service. Here it is!

Old Rank New Rank
Senior Divisional Officer Area Commander
Divisional Officer Group Commander
Assistant Divisional Officer Assistant Group Commander
Station Officer Station Commander
Sub-Officer Watch Commander
Leading Firefighter Crew Commander

There are also new ranks related to fire control, and if you've a particular interest in knowing what they are let us know and we'll forward them on.

February 2006

There is quite a bit to read this month, and a number of issues we wish to highlight to all staff. Please also take the time to review the course updates page.

Mail Strike - This is having a significant affect on our business with regards post (both sending and receiving). We'll keep you updated however to date this month we have not been able to either pay any bills or receive any monies due to us!

We have recently been awarded reaccreditation for our First Aid at Work and Refresher courses. This is great news for us, however also means we will be starting annual performance planning from April of this year. Whilst this is not mandatory pay rises and promotions are based on you completing an annual review.

Contracts - Have you returned yours?

Uniforms - We are conscious that we have not as yet supplied company shirts to all instructors and examiners. We felt that you'd rather get paid! However we do have a uniforms policy and it expressly states NO JEANS. We expect all instructors and examiners to be neatly attired and that includes wearing either cargo trousers or trousers. This is at all venues including the NI Fire and Rescue both at the BTC and at outlying stations.

Educational Advisor - We have met recently with Sarah, our educational advisor and agreed an ongoing quality review programme. It will be in two parts. You will be asked to self-assess and then Sarah will arrive to watch and then have an informal discussion with you. Overall results and areas for development for all instructors/examiners will then be fed back to John. This is an essential part of our quality assurance programme and if you have issues with this please contact John to have a discussion.

Course Reviewers - Do you want to earn some extra money? We are after course reviewers / module reviewers. We are also looking to develop new courses, and can provide guidance on what we want. If you assist in the development of a course you'll get first chance at teaching it (in addition to getting an agreed fee for development).

Professional Advisors - We're currently after some professional advisors. If you know of a suitably qualified medical practitioner, physiotherapist or social worker please let us know. The positions are paid!

January 2006

Course module updates. We have recently had a couple of comments back about course modules and their content. We welcome feedback on all our courses and their content, but to ensure that we examine and if necessary amend the appropriate course it is helpful if you can advise:

  • Which course

  • Which module

  • Which slide

That way we can ensure that all our modules are appropriately reviewed.

We are now well underway with the NI Fire and Rescue Service courses and as such we are becoming somewhat more organised with scheduling. Thanks for bearing with us. Attached are the protocols for the Fire Service which you must all know and follow when on their premises. Whilst we are contracted to deliver a service, we are guests at their facilities and we expect the highest standards from all our instructors and examiners. Equally, there are obligations on the Fire Service. If their equipment or premises are not up to scratch let us know so we can take it up with them. They are professional and a pleasure to deal with so far, so let's hope we can keep it that way throughout the contract.

We have recently invested in two new systems

  • The first is an examinations system which means we will be able to deliver a wider range of exams, with random questions drawn from a bank. It also means that we can add and change questions more easily. If you've got some exam questions or really a problem with one we've got at the moment let us know.

  • Payroll system. I know you'll all be happy to hear this, although the cash flow issue is still that - our issue. What it does mean however is that you'll start to get proper pay slips and we're (well Dave) is currently working on the back pay slips to bring everyone up to date. We are greatly appreciative of your patience.

December 2005

Some of you may be aware that the new European and UK Resuscitation Council guidelines have been placed on the web on the 28th November for publication in December. Rightly so the release states that the organisations do not expect training groups to implement the new guidelines immediately. To ensure continuity in our training and ensure that our courses are updated in one go, we will implement training in the new guidelines from January 2006. Should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us. For information issued by the publisher of our textbook click here and here. One is information for instructors, and the other information on the addendums to the textbook.

You will all have seen our advertisement in the Belfast Telegraph at the end of November for a permanent as well as additional casual and part time instructors and examiners. With the recent increase in our contracts we need to ensure we always have enough people to assist in teaching an examination. We are holding interviews in early December with our educational consultant and will ensure that all staff are made aware of the new members of Revive as soon as possible thereafter.

November 2005

We're currently working on putting this information behind a password protected area, and after we'll ensure you each get a password to keep up to date with our policies etc.

As you are know we've been working hard at increasing our exposure in the market and securing increased contracts and clients. We're continuing to build on our successes to date and are pleased to announce that we've recently secured a major government contract with over 50 courses in the next 12 months. This means there will be more regular scheduling of work and whilst the majority is in Belfast there will be some travel involved for those who are prepared (we'll pay travel expenses).

October 2005

In keeping with our move towards a more corporate profile we are pleased to announce that we now have a range of staff uniforms available to you. Either chambray shirts (blue long sleeved) or polo shirts (white short sleeved) are available to all instructors and examiners dependent upon the frequency with which you are teaching and your own personal preferences. We would ask that either be worn with blue or bone/green etc trousers or cargo pants (not jeans) with black shoes or boots.

Please speak to John about which style you prefer.

September 2005

Uniforms: We have just ordered Revive shirts (Chambray) for everyone and will be issuing them in the next couple of weeks. Whilst we don't have a formal uniforms policy we would ask that all instructors and examiners attempt to at least try to wear them with:

  • Either blue or bone(ish) colour trousers or cargoes (NOT jeans)

  • Black boots or shoes (NOT trainers)

As funds become available we'll look towards issuing fleeces etc but this won't be until the weather gets a bit worse!

August 2005

We are pleased to announce that we can now electronically transfer pay direct to your bank account. No more waiting for cheques to clear! We will continue to provide you with pay slips in line with the required legislation.
